New Palace – King’s ApartmentHighlight of Frederician interior design

Closed due to restoration work

The King’s Apartment is closed until further notice for restoration work performed as part of the "Prussian Palaces and Gardens Master Plan". Thank you for your understanding.

King Frederick the Great's apartment is located away from the banqueting halls and royal quarters in an extensive suite of rooms in the small southern side wing of the New Palace. The apartment comprises eleven rooms and is one of the highlights of Frederician interior design thanks to its splendid furnishings. In no other of his palaces was the interior decoration as luxurious as that in the New Palace. This includes wall panelling, colourful stucco work on the ceilings and precious textiles. Frederick the Great had the clocks, chests of drawers, desks and chandeliers made of French rock crystal and from the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur (Royal Porcelain Manufactory) specially made for the New Palace. As construction of the southern side wing had already begun, the king was able to move into his apartment just two years after the foundation stone was laid, in late summer 1765. When the royal family and other European monarchs stayed in the New Palace during the months of July and August, the king lived in his flat.

Since its construction, the apartment has remained untouched by subsequent generations. Today, only two largely authentic apartments of Frederick the Great remain – in Sanssouci Palace and the New Palace.
