Cecilienhof Country House – Private rooms of the Crown Prince and Crown PrincessInterior design of the early modern era

Closed due to restoration work

Cecilienhof Country House is closed until further notice for restoration work performed as part of the "Prussian Palaces and Gardens Master Plan". Thank you for your understanding.

On the upper floor of Cecilienhof Country House, guests can visit the private rooms of Crown Prince Wilhelm and Crown Princess Cecilie as well as a guest apartment. They offer an excellent insight into the noble living culture and modern interior design of the early 20th century.

The apartment of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess consists of a large bedroom, two dressing rooms with associated bathrooms and a cabinet with a gallery in front. Despite their apparent simplicity, the rooms appear very elegant due to the preciousness and high-quality workmanship of the materials used. The carpets, which have been faithfully reconstructed, were particularly modern at the time.

The rooms also offer unusual insights into the private life and preferences of the last German Crown Prince and Princess, such as the bay window separated by a sliding glass door for the heavy smoker Wilhelm in the shared bedroom and the allusions in several rooms to the ship architecture favoured by Cecilie. A particular highlight is the Crown Prince's blue-tiled bathroom, in which all the sanitary fittings, including a bathtub set into the floor, have been preserved.

The guest apartment above the main entrance was available as a separate apartment for stately visitors. It consists of a living room, bedroom, bathroom and servants' quarters. The original, elaborately refurbished textile furnishings in the two main rooms are particularly worth seeing. A servants' livery from the imperial era can also be seen there.

Glassware and porcelain are exhibited in the upper gallery. An outstanding work of Art Nouveau art is the "Wedding Procession" by Adolph Amberg, which was planned as a centrepiece for the wedding of the Crown Prince and Princess in 1905. However, Empress Auguste Victoria found the figures too revealing and rejected the design.
